Wonderful hand colored engraving of a male and female kangaroo with their joey. Artist: Edouard Traviès, and etched by Fournier. From "Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle - Mammiféres". Published Paris, 1849, by Renard, Martinet & Co.
Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny was a French botanist and geologist specializing in the Tertiary of France. He was the younger brother of French naturalist and South American explorer, Alcide d'Orbigny. At the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, d'Orbigny identified many of the flowering plant species returned to France from his brother's natural history collecting journeys through South America.
This beautiful hand colored lithograph has been selected from a French work entitled "Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle", published in Paris in 1849 under the supervision of Charles d'Orbigny. This was one of the finest and best illustrated natural history works of the era. The outstanding and vividly hand colored plates are by the leading artists of the day, such as Travies, Oudart and Pretre. The order, genus and species appear on each print in Latin and French.
